Transporting Topiaries to ‘it’s a small world’ in Disneyland Park
Last week, in the middle of the night, some new characters arrived at "it's a small world" in Disneyland park. The topiary engineering team started around 1 a.m. in the nursery and carefully transported a deer grown from Pyracantha coccinea (botanical name); Firethorn (common name) and a lion grown from Podocarpus macrophyllus maki (botanical name); Shrubby Yew Pine (common name). The entire process took about 5 hours, but you can see it here in less than one minute. Here are some fun facts I learned from the talented topiary team: The deer and the lion took about one year to grow starting with 15-gallon shrubs. Other topiaries can take up to five years to be "show" ready. The topiary engineers go through a training program and apprenticeship so they can master the technique of maintaining these iconic figures. There are currently 25 character topiaries at the Disneyland Resort and hundreds of geometric and spiraled shaped topiaries. The plants are pruned every 2 weeks in the warm season and 1 month in the cool season. All the character topiaries are pruned by hand with the use of sheep sheers and lightweight hedge sheers. For students who are interested in having fun while also getting some college credit, there is the Disney College Program, which offers a great semester program to those selected to participate. Those who enroll in the Disney College Program will encounter three experiences that Disney's program focuses on: living, learning, and earning. Disney presents the program as a way to give students interested in a career in media, the entertainment industry, or the hospitality industry a way to experience and learn about one company's business model and gain skills that will be useful on whatever career path they choose. And, of course, even students who don't eventually join one of those industries will still take away important skills. Basically, in order to apply for this program, interested students must attend a presentation given by a Disney representative (or you can sign up and view an ePresentation at the website). After the presentation, you should fill out an online application and then you will be asked to do an interview. Once the interview is complete, you'll then learn whether or not you've been selected for the program. Mysterious Faces of Italy at Epcot
Epcot is nearly 30 years old, but I only recently discovered these unique architectural details at the Italy Pavilion in World Showcase. I hope you find them as intriguing as I do. On the south wall of the Doge's Palace, you will find a unique sculpture of a face, below which an inscription reads: "De nontie secrete contro contrabandieri et transgressorio in ogni sorte di ogli" which translates from old Italian to: "Secret accusations against smugglers of any event." This "mouth of truth," as it was sometimes called, is a representation of a Venetian letterbox, which allowed citizens of Venice to anonymously lodge complaints and report crimes to the government. Venetian letterboxes were found throughout the city, and took on many different appearances, often depicting mythological figures. The Epcot version gets its inspiration from Bacchus, the god of wine. Just a few feet away, a mysterious, yet enchanting female bust seems to guard a secluded staircase, just another of the many thoughtful tributes to the enormous cache of art treasures found throughout Italy. Disney Consumer Products (DCP) today announced the first merchandising program inspired by Disney Channel's hit buddy comedy series Shake It Up. Since January 2011 to date, Shake It Up is TV's #1 series with Kids 6-11 and Tweens 9-14.* The hit show centers on CeCe and Rocky, played by Bella Thorne and Zendaya, whose dreams of becoming professional dancers are realized when they land roles on a popular teen dance show. Royalty at Disneyland Park
There has been a lot of talk about royal visits here in Southern California lately, so it feels like the perfect time to open the vault and take a look back at royals visiting Disneyland park through the years. There have been many photos taken in the last 56 years of various kings, queens, princes and princesses, and here are some of the most interesting - some of them being shared for the very first time. One of the first heads of state to visit us was Mohammed V, King of Morocco, in 1957, shown here with Walt Disney at Sleeping Beauty Castle. In 1959, King Hussein of Jordan made his first visit to Disneyland park. He's shown here touring Tomorrowland, and yes, that is the Matterhorn Bobsleds taking shape behind him. He returned to the park decades later with his wife, the American-born Queen Noor and their son, Prince Hamzah. Fast-forward to 1995 when Sarah, Duchess of York, took Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenia on Alice in Wonderland. If you happened to be at Walt Disney World recently, you might have recognized a face among the crowd from a classic TV show when original "Mickey Mouse Club" Mouseketeer Sherry Van Meter (née Alberoni) was here on vacation. In November, we shared plans to re-imagine Pleasure Island and bring other new and compelling experiences to life at Downtown Disney. Today, we'd like to update you on our progress. First, we're excited that some of the new experiences we announced are already becoming favorites, like the newly expanded LEGO Imagination Center and AMC's first Dine-In Theatre in Florida. The great news is there is more on the way. Recently, Orlando Harley-Davidson opened its newly expanded 3,635-square-foot store at Downtown Disney West Side. The largest and most interactive Harley merchandise store of its kind, it draws guests in with a 40-foot tower and massive LCD/LED screens showing specially produced footage of motorcycles in action. Guests are also able to see and sit on some of the latest Harley-Davidson motorcycles and a brand new production studio lets guests be pictured in their favorite riding spot or transformed into real bikers. Guests can even design biker vests of their own. Beginning July 6, guests with visual disabilities will be able to explore Disneyland park in a whole new way through an enhanced Disney-designed device that provides detailed audio description of outdoor areas. This feature compliments the audio description inside Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks' attractions and theaters that was launched over a year ago. "Disney Parks have long been at the forefront of providing accessibility for guests with disabilities," said Greg Hale, chief safety officer and vice president of Worldwide Standards and Auditing for Walt Disney Parks & Resorts. "We are pleased to build on this legacy with new technology that enables us to do something that has never been done before – provide rich audio description in moving attractions and outdoor environments." On July 14, the U.S. Coast Guard Band will perform at 4 p.m. on the Palisades Stage in Disney California Adventure park. We are honored to host the premiere band representing the U.S. Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security. The 55-member ensemble has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the nation, including Carnegie Hall. Building Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid at Magic Kingdom Park
I love sharing New Fantasyland updates with our readers, and this one is no exception. Our friends at Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) recently created a behind-the-scenes video on the creation of New Fantasyland to feature within the One Man's Dream exhibit at Disney's Hollywood Studios. (This attraction showcases Disney milestone projects of the past, and now includes a preview area of exciting projects WDI is currently working on at Magic Kingdom Park). WDI also shared the following teaser video with us, which focuses on one of these exciting new projects: the Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid attraction. The expanded video will debut at One Man's Dream this week. In the video, Imagineer Chris Beatty gives us a sneak peek at the making of Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid through some never-before-seen sketches, artist renderings, attraction maps and more, and shares some details on Prince Eric's castle and the attraction's creative queue. Imagineer Eric Miller also takes us onsite to see the current state of the attraction's progress. Hollywood Studios Feature Attraction…The Great Movie Ride
If you love the movies like I do, there is no better place to get your "fix" than at Disney's Hollywood Studios. This theme park celebrates Hollywood during its Golden era from the '30's and 40's. From its fantastic detailed streets like Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards from the era, to attractions like "Catastrophe Canyon" and thrilling stunt shows as "Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular" this is a movie fanatic's dream. But for me, the Main Attraction here at the Studios is the "Great Movie Ride". This is the perfect attraction above all others to showcase what the Studios are all about, and that is great Movies. Although considered a Dark Ride, it is the brightest attraction in the park. The ride brings you through some of the most famous scenes from movie classics from many genres. Boarding a ride vehicle similar to the trams at Disney, you sit six across and are taken on a slow, narrated tour of each scene by a cast member. Situated directly behind Sorcerer Mickey's hat, it is housed in a replica of the famous "Grauman's Chinese Theatre" in Hollywood. But the building is called just "The Chinese Theatre".
