Disneyrewind - June 11, 1929 Disney files to trademark Mickey Mouse
1929 - Walt Disney's trademark application for the image of Mickey Mouse is filed with the United States Patent Office.
I'm not going to get into the differences between trademarks and copyrights. ok I am to some extent here...
Mickey mouse first was copyrighted on November 18, 1928 with the release of Steamboat Willie. copyrights for corporations was 75 years and that film was set to go into public domain in 2003. This didn't ofcourse happen. Walt Disney along with many other interested parties courted congress and and got that extended to 95 years. So Steamboat Willie will go into public domain on November 18, 2023 if no further extensions are granted.
Trademarks, now this is different and as long "Mickey Mouse" doesn't become a household word of such generic proportions or Walt Disney Co for some weird reason quits using him he's trademarked indefinitely.
