Disneyrewind - June 20, 1976 Fort Wilderness' River Country opens at Walt Disney World Resort in Orland, FL

Notice River Country was located up at the top left on this map of Fort Wilderness Campground.

June 20, 1976 The River Country water park opens at Walt Disney World.  Most of the water park used unchlorinated water straight from Bay Lake.  Which it has been claimed that the unchlorinated water was the reason for it's closure, But ultimately it was due to being mostly sold out everyday the park was just too small for the growing Walt Disney World Resort. So 2 new parks Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach were built.  Blizzard Beach is about 4 times the size of River Country.  The newer more modern and yes chlorinated water parks spelled the end for River Country. River Country was closed November 2, 2001.
